Great question Natalie, have you been to Australia? I haven’t been there but would like to visit one day!

Do you have a globe or a map? ? If so, there will be a line that runs right across the middle from left to right called the “Equator” – this marks the middle of the planet. The Equator is the part of the Earth that is closest to the Sun for most of the year and so it gets the hottest. Australia is just below the Equator, so it’s quite close to the middle of the planet.

This means that the top part of Australia gets very hot, but the bottom part, in the South is a bit colder.

Because Australia is below the Equator, its seasons are opposite to ours (because we are above the Equator) – when it’s winter in the UK, it’s summer in Australia! That means it’s very hot on Christmas Day in Australia!
