        Hi guys,

Great question! Earthquakes are something that scientists are still working very hard to try and understand.

The surface of the Earth is make up of giant slabs of crust (like a pie! ?), where two of these slabs (called “tectonic plates”) meet they can press together and this causes problems. This is why you often hear about earthquakes happening in the same places again and again (like near Japan), they are not random.

But, even though we know where they might happen, it’s still very difficult to predict when they will occur – so lots of people are investigating this.
