        Hi Annie,

        That’s a good question. I would say that it started getting bad in the middle of the 1800s during the Industrial Revoluion. The introduction of steam engines let us do things we have never done before and we could do them quicker and bigger. We also had to mine for coal so we could make steam.

        Back then we didn’t really care about what happened to the land and people would either just leave things piled up or bury it deep in the ground thinking nobody would notice or care.

        We know a lot more about land pollution and sometimes the past comes back to haunt us. Thankfully now though we are getting better at doing things and we shouldn’t be polluting the land (and if we get caught then we can have a big fine and sometimes go to jail)
