News actually report findings and forecasts from scientist that study and predict weather conditions (Meteorologist). Meteorologists work with models and computer programs to project into the future to predict what the weather condition will be. They retrive a lot data and imageries from satellite measurements which help their calculations and predications.

Great question! The news channels work with scientists who study the weather (these are called meteorologists) who run their computer models to predict what the weather will be for the next few days.

They can do this best when they have very recent measurements to include in their model. So if you watch the weather forecast in the morning, their prediction for what will happen in the afternoon is normally right, but the prediction for what will happen a few days or a week later, is more difficult to do (so it’s not always correct!).

There are also weather stations all over the country that measure things like wind speed and temperature which can help scientists in guessing what the weather will be like. That helps the short-term forecasts be more accurate.

It’s still very hard to guess what the weather will be like sometimes, even with clever computer programmes. My weather forecast was completely wrong this morning so I went out without an umbrella and got completely soaked! 🙁
