In the polar regions there are lots of different kinds of ice. There are big ice sheets on the land (like the Greenland Ice Sheet) plus large pieces of ice floating in the water.

We know that the Greenland Ice Sheet is shrinking, scientists can use satellites and aeroplanes to fly over Greenland and take pictures of the ice sheets to see what’s happening. At the moment, we think the Greenland Ice Sheet is losing about 200 giga tonnes of ice per year. A double decker bus weighs about 15 tonnes, so Greenland is losing about 13 billion buses worth of ice per year.

That’s a great way of imagining it, Cat 13 million buses worth of ice every year is a massive amount!
